HARMFUL ALGAL BLOOM

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) are made of blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). HABs may look like pea soup, green or blue paint, or a scum layer floating on surface. It can occur in lakes or reservoirs and may contain toxins that are a health hazard to animals and humans. The most common symptoms of exposure include gastrointestinal illness and skin irritation. Some toxins can cause liver, respiratory, or neurological problems. 

Water To Avoid

  • Looks like spilled paint or antifreeze.
  • Has surface scums, mats, or films.
  • Discolored or has streaks.
  • Green globs floating below the surface.

Avoid Swallowing Lake Water

Report HABs to the Utah Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ). If you become exposed, contact Utah Poison Control.
